If you mark up readings and slides on an iPad, Scope can send them there for you. Click Send to Lectra on a PDF in Chrome, and it arrives in Lectra, ready for Apple Pencil. When you’re done, you can attach the marked-up file to a Canvas assignment or Gradescope without downloading anything. Lectra is Scope’s free iPad app for reading and annotating PDFs. To learn about it, see the Lectra overview.

Before you begin

  • Install Lectra on your iPad and sign in. See Install Lectra.
  • Open Lectra on your iPad at least once after you sign in.
  • Sign in to Scope in Chrome with the same Google account you use in Lectra. See Sign in to Scope.
  • Turn on Send to Lectra in Scope, as described in the following section. It’s off until you turn it on.

Turn on Send to Lectra

1

Open Settings

Click the Scope icon, then click the Settings icon (the gear).
2

Turn it on

Under Features, turn on Send to Lectra. Scope confirms On. You’ll see Send to Lectra on PDFs you open.
After you sign in, the Scope popup may also offer Have an iPad? Turn on Send to Lectra to mark up PDFs with Apple Pencil. Click Turn On to do the same thing. While Send to Lectra is on, the bottom of the popup shows whether Lectra is ready: Lectra connected, Lectra not connected, or Sign in to send to Lectra.

Allow PDFs saved on your computer

To send PDFs that you open from your own computer (not from a website), Chrome needs one more permission. If Scope shows PDFs saved on this computer need one more permission., click How to allow local PDFs, then turn on Allow access to file URLs on the page that opens.

Send a PDF

Where you start depends on where the file is.
Open the PDF in Canvas. A round Send to Lectra button appears in the corner of the page. Click it.To move the button out of the way, press and hold it, then drag. Scope remembers where you put it.
When you use a Send to Lectra button or the popup’s More actions menu, Scope asks you to confirm with the file name. Click Send. Sends from the right-click menu and from dragging a file start right away.

What you can send

  • PDFs, from any of the places in the previous section.
  • Slides, documents, spreadsheets, and images, when you drag them onto the popup or right-click a link to them: PowerPoint, Keynote, Word, Pages, Excel, Numbers, rich text, plain text, CSV, PNG, JPEG, HEIC, GIF, WebP, and TIFF files. Lectra turns them into PDFs on your iPad.
  • Files up to 50 MB each.

After you send

The file goes to Scope Inbox in Lectra. If it came from a Canvas course, Lectra files it in a folder named after the course. To find it on your iPad, see Bring documents into Lectra. Scope tells you what happened:

If the PDF is already in Lectra

If you send a PDF that’s already in your Lectra library, Scope shows Already in Lectra and lets you choose:
  • Send a Copy: add a second copy, named with “(copy)” at the end.
  • Replace in Lectra: swap the PDF in Lectra for this one. Your notes on it stay with the document.
  • Cancel: send nothing.

Send a whole course

You can send every PDF in a Canvas course’s Files to Lectra in one step.
1

Open the course's Files page

In Canvas, go to the course and click Files.
2

Open the course menu

Click the Scope icon, click More actions (the three dots), and choose Import course to Lectra.
3

Choose folders

Scope shows the course’s folders and how many PDFs are in each. Clear any folder you don’t want. The bottom of the window shows how many PDFs are selected and how many are already in Lectra and will be updated.
4

Import

Click Import to Lectra. Scope shows its progress, then how many PDFs it imported and updated.
5

Open Lectra

Click Open Lectra, or open Lectra on your iPad. Your course is in your library.
Import course to Lectra appears only on a Canvas course’s Files page, and only while Send to Lectra is on. It sends PDFs only.

Save a whole course to your computer

You can also download every PDF in a Canvas course to your computer. You don’t need to sign in or turn on Send to Lectra for this.
1

Open the course's Files page

In Canvas, go to the course and click Files.
2

Choose the download

Click the Scope icon, click More actions, and choose Download course to computer.
3

Choose folders and save

In Download course, clear any folder you don’t want, then click Download course. The Scope icon in your toolbar shows how many files are left.
4

Open the folder

When it’s done, Scope shows how many PDFs it saved. Click Show folder to see them.
Scope saves the PDFs in your Downloads folder, in a folder named after the course, with the course’s subfolders inside it. Downloading the same course again replaces the earlier copies.

Attach your marked-up work to an assignment

When you’ve finished a document in Lectra, you can attach it to a Canvas assignment or a Gradescope submission from Chrome.
1

Open the upload form

In Canvas, open the assignment and start a file upload. In Gradescope, open the submission window.
2

Select from Lectra

Click Select from Lectra, next to Canvas’s file upload or Gradescope’s Select PDF button.
3

Pick the document

In the list, find the document. Documents you’ve written on show Annotated. You can search with Search your Lectra documents….
4

Let Scope attach it

Scope shows Getting the latest from your iPad…, then Attaching…, then that the document is ready. The file is in the upload form.
5

Submit

Check the file and submit the assignment yourself. Scope never submits for you.
If your iPad doesn’t answer in time, Scope offers to attach the most recent backed-up copy instead, or to try again. For the latest marks to be included, keep Lectra open on your iPad while you attach.
Select from Lectra appears only while Send to Lectra is on and you’re signed in. In Canvas, it appears on assignments that accept file uploads.

Receive files from Lectra

When you send a document from Lectra to your computer, Scope saves it to your Downloads folder. This works while Send to Lectra is on and you’re signed in to Scope. To see the status, open Settings > Features and look under Send to Lectra. Connected with Ready to receive files means Scope is ready. While a file arrives, it shows Downloading Lectra file and the file name. To learn how to send from your iPad, see Send files between devices. If you also use the Lectra Receiver extension for Chrome, Scope hides its own Send to Lectra button on website PDFs and its Select from Lectra buttons, so you don’t see two of each. See Lectra Receiver.

Check your Lectra storage

Files you send to Lectra use your Lectra storage. When you’re signed in, the top of Settings shows how much you’ve used, such as Lectra storage: 1.2 GB of 5 GB used. To manage it, open Lectra on your iPad.

If a send doesn’t work

If a send fails, Scope shows Couldn’t send to Lectra with the reason. For more fixes, see Troubleshooting.
