Before you begin
- An iPad that supports Apple Intelligence, with iPadOS 26 or later.
- Apple Intelligence turned on in your iPad’s Settings app.
- Your iPad’s Apple Intelligence model finished downloading. Your iPad downloads it after you turn on Apple Intelligence.
Turn on intelligence
Lectra doesn’t read any document until you say yes. You can turn it on the first time you use a feature, or in Settings. The first time you use a feature
The first time you tap Intelligence (the sparkles button) in a document, or Ask in your library, Lectra asks “Let Lectra read this document?” or “Let Lectra read these documents?”. The prompt explains that the work happens on your iPad, that your notes and documents are never used to train any model, and that every use is listed in Settings.- Tap Turn On to continue.
- Tap Not Now to keep intelligence off. The sparkles and Ask buttons disappear after you close the prompt. You can turn intelligence on later in Settings.
In Settings
1
Open Settings
Open Lectra’s Settings. To learn how, see Settings.
2
Go to Intelligence
Tap Intelligence.
3
Turn on the switch
Turn on the switch at the top of the screen. It reads On when intelligence is on.
Turning on intelligence also lets Lectra turn your lecture recordings into text. To learn more, see Record lectures.
Ask about a document
The Intelligence chat answers questions using the pages of the document you have open, and shows which pages it read.1
Open a document
Open any PDF or notebook in your library.
2
Open the chat
In the toolbar, tap Intelligence (the sparkles button). The chat opens as a panel. On a wide screen, it sits beside the page.
3
Ask a question
Tap a suggestion, or type your own question in the box. While Lectra works, it shows which page it’s reading.
4
Check the source
Under each answer, tap a page chip, such as p. 6, to go to a page that Lectra read for that answer.
- Summarize this page
- What are the key terms here?
- Explain this more simply
- Quiz me on this page
- Tap Copy to copy the answer.
- Tap Add as note to put the answer on the current page as a sticky note. Drag the note where you want it.
Lectra answers from the pages it reads for each question, so it may not see the whole document at once. If the pages don’t cover your question, Lectra can answer from general knowledge and says that the answer comes from outside the document. Check important answers against the page.
Ask across several documents
You can ask one question about several documents at once, for example to compare two readings or to find which one covers a topic.1
Select documents
In your library, tap Select, and then tap two or more documents.
2
Tap Ask
In the selection bar, tap Ask (the sparkles button). The Ask across documents sheet opens.
3
Ask your question
Type a question, such as “Compare their main arguments” or “Where is this topic covered?”. The answer names the document that each point comes from.
For long documents, Lectra reads only the beginning of each one. When that happens, the sheet says “These documents are long — only the beginning of each is used right now.”
Get a better name for an imported file
When you add a file with a name that doesn’t say much, such as “Untitled” or “Scan”, Lectra can read the first pages and suggest a better name. This works only when intelligence is on. When Lectra has a suggestion, it asks “Rename this file?” and shows the name it suggests.- Tap Rename to use the suggested name.
- Tap Keep Name to leave the name as it is.
Use Siri and Shortcuts
Lectra adds two actions to the Shortcuts app and Siri. Both run on your iPad and need intelligence turned on.
The summary action reads only the beginning of a long document.
See what intelligence did
Lectra keeps a record of each time a feature read one of your documents. The record lists only the feature, the document’s name, the date and time, and where the work ran. It never stores your questions, the document’s text, or the answers.1
Open the record
In Settings > Intelligence, scroll to RECENT ACTIVITY.
2
Read an entry
Each entry shows the feature, such as Ask this document, followed by the document’s name, the date and time, and “on this device”.
3
Clear it (optional)
Tap Clear, and then tap Clear again to confirm. Clearing the list doesn’t change your documents.
Turn off intelligence
In Settings > Intelligence, turn off the switch. Lectra stops reading your documents right away, and the sparkles and Ask buttons disappear. Turning it off doesn’t delete anything. Your saved chats, your activity record, and any lecture transcripts stay on your iPad. If you turn intelligence back on, they’re still there.Privacy
- Summaries, answers, and quizzes are generated on your iPad. Your notes and documents aren’t sent anywhere to produce them.
- Your notes and documents are never used to train any AI model.
- A feature reads a document only when you use it on that document. The two exceptions run only after you turn on intelligence: rename suggestions for newly added files, and automatic transcripts of your lecture recordings.
Limits
- Lectra answers from a limited number of pages per question, and from only the beginning of each document when you ask across documents.
- If you ask many questions in a short time, Lectra pauses briefly and shows “Intelligence is cooling down. Try again in” followed by the wait time.
- Answers can be wrong. Use the page chips to check them.
Troubleshooting
If intelligence isn’t available, Settings > Intelligence shows one of these messages in place of the switch.“There's no readable text in this document yet.”
“There's no readable text in this document yet.”
The document has no text that Lectra can read yet, for example a scan whose pages haven’t been recognized. Lectra recognizes the text on scanned pages in the background. Try again later.
“That was too much for one question.”
“That was too much for one question.”
Ask about a smaller part of the document, such as one page or one section.
“The on-device model declined to answer that one.”
“The on-device model declined to answer that one.”
Apple’s on-device model won’t answer some questions. Rephrase the question, or ask about a different part of the document.
